By making the benefit to the community a priority over profit, a cooperative grocery store like the Renaissance Community Co-op can offer competitive prices, higher wages, better benefits and customer service. Because it is owned by the community it will never pick up and leave in search of higher profits for shareholders. It can also re-invest the profit it does make back into the community through a democratic and transparent process.
